Cha-Ching Gets Even More Delicious - Version 1.0.3 Released!
8 Jun 07
We are very proud to announce a new release that some may thing would qualify for a 1.1 moniker because of how much of an impact the new fixes and features will have, but we’re saving those point releases for really, really special stuff.
We’re gearing up for WWDC Week where there’s going to be a par-tay going on (which we’re giving a demo at) where hopefully in addition to a bunch of great developers and sites attending there will be tasty.. er.. delicious.. snacks.
Without further ado:
Features Added
- OFX and QFX support added!
- Database migration to SQLite for enhanced performance
- Can now sort transactions in Print Panel
- Printing now uses already filtered list of transactions
- Source pane can now be expanded much more
- Can now search using multiple tags
- Searching from To and From fields now searches from both First and Last name
Bugs Fixed
- fixed issues with Auto-Complete in Title, To and From fields
- fixed issue where 100 transaction demo was not respected
- fixed issue when using multiple tags in Smart Folders and Budgets
- fixed issue with formatting in Transfer panel
- fixed issue when paying a bill from/to account is not showing up in the appropriate account
- fixed issue where deleting transaction from Accounts do not delete it from Master Vault
- fixed drawing issues in Budgets
Thanks for the support!

Glad to see the update. It’s very welcome.
However, after updating, all my transaction photos are gone. Totally deleted. When this happened, the first thing out of my mouth was “oooooh man…” like I had just been punched in the stomach. Are these files stored in the app, and that’s why they got deleted?

Hi, same problem for me… all pictures are…gone !…bad day…

Please contact us regarding this issue you two, others: We’ve fixed this.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw “.ofx support”. Finally I was going to be able to use this fancy app.
Unfortunately, it seems the importing of the .ofx files doesn’t do anything whatsoever. Once I select a .ofx file, I just get back to Cha-ching and nothing has changed.
I’m willing to send you my .ofx file so you can test with it. Please let’s get this fixed!

Alternatively it crashes if I choose “Import QIF”…

Agree with Wim - is there something I’m doing wrong? Really want to use this great looking app!

I’m getting the same crash issue. I upgraded to 1.0.3, launch and open up my existing file (note, it’s empty with no transactions). I select Import QIF and boom. Here is the dump.

Note — I tried deleting my Cha_Ching.db file and starting over completely from scratch and I still get the same “boom” when I try to activate Import QIF.

“fixed issues with Auto-Complete in Title, To and From fields”
As much as I wish this were true, it still chokes half the time on anything with a space in it. :(
June 10th, 2007 at 9:53 am
Haven’t had any crashes (in the 24 hours I’ve been using it), but there are a lot of little bugs and anoyances. I hope the $40 I paid is put to good use in fixing this. (It’s still better than anything else on the Mac.)
Also, maybe I’m doing something wrong, but when I import a QIF, there appears to be no provision for auto-matching previously imported transactions. Thus, I have to manually do so and could end up with a bunch of duplicates. Am I missing something? This seems like elementary functionality that *should* be in there.

i updated to v 1.0.3 not too long ago and just came across a problem with .mac backups. i can backup to .mac with no problem, but when i try to revert from my .mac backup, it fails.

Juan mailed me very short after I posted my comment here. I immediately sent him my .ofx file, but haven’t had a reply yet, and almost a week has passed. I’ve just mailed him again, hoping that a solution will follow quickly.

Seriously guys, it’s been well over a week since this release and none of the bugs mentioned here have been taken care of. This app has no right to be released as a 1.x version when it’s beta quality at best. I’m pretty much done with it until you guys straighten things out and release something that works. 40 bucks completely wasted.
June 16th, 2007 at 5:13 pm
Jason, normally after reading a post like yours I would think it far too negative and demanding. Unfortunately, I can only agree with every word you said. I was absolutely in love with this app at first, but the level of support provided has been disgraceful, as has been the reliability of the app relative to its overly ambitious version 1.0 . I hope at some point that that opinion will change, but that would first require the developers to stop ignoring the technical problem preventing my license from activating the app.

I love the interface and would buy it if the import function worked. It ether does nothing or crashes.
Fix this and I will buy it!

@Zog -> It takes a lot for me to reach the point where I feel the need to write a post like that, and I agree that it would sound negative and demanding in any other context. I’m glad you posted in agreement so that the message gets across.
I’m a software developer myself so I understand the process that goes into developing and releasing an app and I think that the Midnight Apps guys are missing two key concepts:
1. Decent review cycle before the release. There’s no way bugs like crashing on clicking the import button should ever make it out into the wild.
2. Commitment to fix critical bugs when they do come up. As a consultant, if I ever left a paying client for as long as these guys do with a non-functional app, I’d be fired. Plain and simple.
I really do want to love this app. It’s just impossible given the condition that it’s in and there appears to be no end in sight for a fix. It really is a shame.
June 18th, 2007 at 9:23 am
@Jason - while I am far from a developer, I absolutely agree with your comments. This seems to me to be just plain rational.
I think, in this case, we fell victim to timing, where pushing a release out the door before WWDC was seen as critical, followed by attendance at said WWDC. I don’t think the absence of fixes would be considered common practice, and understand the want to showcase new product at key annual conventions, but the test and review cycle really should be better adhered to.
June 18th, 2007 at 4:48 pm
This is really getting ridiculous. Soon we’ll have been waiting half a year for .OFX importing support… while we have paid. And there are plenty of other bugs, all you have to do is look at these comments.
June 20th, 2007 at 9:35 am
@asylus -> I’d love to think this was because of WWDC, but it’s far from an isolated incident. This lack of support has been going on for a long time now. I just wish the guys would spend a little more time developing a good app instead of hyping how “delicious” their product is.
June 20th, 2007 at 6:22 pm
I’m not exactly sure how “lack of support” is far from an isolated incident and has been going on for some time. Since coming out of beta, in the space of two months they have issued 3 software updates. All updates contained bug fixes and further enhancements. They are also active on the community forum.
June 21st, 2007 at 10:30 am
Zenrain, the rate of updates per month does not imply that the software is stable, or even usable, for all users. And regardless of the stability of the software, it certainly does not excuse the poor response (or lack of any response) that these problem reports have received.
I’m sure for many users installing and using Cha-Ching goes along without a hitch, or with only a small hiccup in functionality here or there. But for those of us paying customers who have experienced major problems with the software, or who are still inexplicably unable to use the application at all, the support has been disappointing at best.
June 21st, 2007 at 11:22 am
My response was dealing directly with the generalization over the “lack of support going on for some time” in response to an absence of fixes not being common practice. I’m not denying there are issues in the software.
The absence of fixes as far as I’ve seen is not a common practice. Many issues starting with the 1.0 version were resolved with subsequent releases. Functionality of some area’s have already been vastly improved - Bill Manager (previously practically unusable), reports (also previously unusable), keyboard shortcuts, budgets, the list goes on.
The main issue Midnight Apps are running into right now is that the updates are introducing new issues, which they have to go back and resolve. The import crash is a good example of this. They have posted on the community forum that this is being worked on for 1.0.4.
How this translates into bad support I’m not sure. What is disappointing is that releases introduce new issues. I’m hopeful that they tighten up the release QA to resolve this in the future.

My bug’s even weirder. My whole App stopped working. The interface is just a white blank space. If I resize the window, things become a graphcial mess mixed out of the bottom bar, and the windows behind Cha-Ching.
Guys, I’m happy I just paid 15 bucks during beta, but seriously I think I’ll be looking at some of these FREE ALTERNATIVES:

If it helps, that issue is supposed to be resolved in 1.0.4. From the forums, Shibuya just posted release is imminent. If that’s a few hours or few days, I don’t know.
